54 mm vs 58 mm Sage Portafilter Parts: Why Size Alone Is Not Enough
“54 mm” and “58 mm” describe the nominal diameter of the group head, portafilter and basket. They tell you which family a part belongs to. They do not tell you whether a particular part fits your machine.
Which Sage machines are 54 mm and which are 58 mm
From Sage’s own UK pages, either the machine’s product description or the size in the name of a portafilter, basket, gasket or screen that Sage lists for it:
54 mm
- Bambino BES450 — Sage’s product page: “using a 54mm portafilter”
- Bambino Plus BES500 — Sage’s product page: “using a 54mm stainless steel portafilter”
- Duo-Temp Pro BES810, Barista Express BES870, Barista Express BES875, Barista Pro BES878 and Barista Touch BES880 — all listed for the 54 mm portafilter assembly SP0027237
- Barista Express Impress BES876 and Barista Touch Impress BES882 — listed for 54 mm shower screen parts
58 mm
- Dual Boiler BES920, Oracle Jet BES985 and Oracle Dual Boiler BES995 — all listed for the 58 mm portafilter SP0001817. Sage’s Oracle Jet page also describes “the professional-style 58 mm portafilter”.
Same size, different part
Within the 54 mm family, Sage uses at least three different portafilter part numbers:
| Part number | Sage’s name | Listed for |
|---|---|---|
| SP0027237 | Portafilter Assembly 54mm | BES810, BES870, BES875, BES878, BES880 (and more on Sage’s page) |
| SP0024799 | Portafilter Assembly 54mm | BES500 |
| SP0100220 | Portafilter Assembly | BES450 |
The first two even share the same official name. The same pattern repeats for baskets: the Bambino machines have their own dual-wall baskets (SP0024833, SP0024834), separate from the 54 mm baskets listed for the Barista Express and Barista Pro (SP0001518 to SP0001521).
Why would same-diameter parts differ? Portafilters differ in the shape and position of the locking lugs, the spout, the depth of the basket seat and the spring that holds the basket. Baskets differ in depth, in the rim and in the groove for the retaining spring. None of that shows in “54 mm”.
Accessories follow the same rule
Sage’s accessories are sold by size too, but the official pages still name machines:
- The Force Gauge Tamper 54mm lists the Barista Express BES870 and the Bambino BES450, among others.
- The Naked Portafilter 58mm lists the Oracle Dual Boiler BES995.
- The 58 mm naked portafilter SES058 is listed for the Dual Boiler BES920, and Sage states it is not compatible with the Barista Express BES875.
When the official listing contradicts itself
Sage’s page for the Naked Portafilter 54mm includes the Oracle Jet BES985 in its “Works With” list. Sage’s own Oracle Jet page describes a 58 mm portafilter, and Sage lists 58 mm portafilter, basket and cleaning-disc parts for it. A 54 mm portafilter cannot be both. We therefore do not list that accessory for the Oracle Jet, and we explain why on both pages. If you own an Oracle Jet and want that accessory, ask Sage support before ordering.
Third-party parts
Many non-Sage parts are sold as “54 mm, fits Sage/Breville”. Some will fit; some will not seat, lock or seal correctly. We do not list them, because there is no official statement tying their part number to a Sage model code. If you buy one, check the seller’s returns policy and compare it physically with your original part before relying on it.
